Hi, I’m Aron Kontorovich, a band director and pianist in Brooklyn, NY.

The Work I Get to Do

After school, I am the Marching Band Director. While I oversee the entire ensemble, I work most directly with the winds and have three amazing co-directors. They handle our drum line, color guard, and administrative matters, allowing me to keep all of my focus on the music. In the fall, we form a pep band and play at all of our varsity football home games, our homecoming pep rally, and pep rallies at other schools. In the spring, we march in parades such as the Ridgewood Memorial Day Parade and other parades within Marine Park and the greater Brooklyn community.

High School classroom piano room where Aron serves as Director of Piano

During the day, I run a high school classroom piano program with beginning, intermediate, and advanced level courses. Most students enter the program without any previous piano study. Students who are accepted into the advanced class retain their seat, meaning they have the opportunity to spend four years studying piano in high school.

Salute to Music Brooklyn Concert Band

On Saturday mornings, I co-direct the Brooklyn Concert Band for Salute to Music NYC, a free program for students in grades 4-8 across the city. This program is special to me because I get to work with an amazing co-director and help shape students' musical growth in Brooklyn schools. The concert band, made up of dedicated young musicians, focuses on reinforcing fundamentals and enhancing musicianship. Salute to Music fosters a fun, supportive community where students can play at a level not always possible in their school programs.

In 2024, for the first time ever, the DOE Arts Audition Bootcamp was opened to include some of the most serious piano students from all around New York City. I was fortunate to develop the piano component for the program, join a faculty of veteran DOE teachers, and collaborate with master teaching artists

More recently

This past school year, I had the privilege of serving as Co-Chair of the NYSSMA Brooklyn Majors Festival at Brooklyn College, collaborating with outstanding music educators to provide meaningful performance experiences for student ensembles from across the borough. It was an honor to help lead an event that celebrates musical excellence, artistic growth, and educational collaboration.

I was also deeply honored to be recognized as a 2026 Yamaha 40 Under 40 Music Educator, a distinction that celebrates innovative music educators who are making a meaningful impact in their schools, communities, and the profession. This recognition reflects commitment to inspiring young musicians, fostering artistic excellence, and creating transformative musical experiences both on and off the podium.

“ Aron taught me in 10 1-hr sessions what I wasn't able to learn in more than 10 years of lessons!”

"Aron is a talented musician, but also an incredibly talented teacher. He is adept at assessing skill level and creating interesting and engaging lessons to improve on current skill."
